Hello everyone once again!
The following is a list of books and magazines that are recommended for
Pagemaker users and general DTPers. Cindy Hollingsworth compiled this list
from the previous BOOKS.FAQ (which this will replace in future editions
of the DTPFAQ file.) Many thanks goes to her!
I have modified the file slightly for ascii layout purposes. Also, most of
the books are for the old 4.x version of Pagemaker; the new editions will
be updated as they become available.
Enjoy! and let us know if you have anything to add...
Geof [gwp@cs.purdue.edu]

Thanks to all contributors. Those I could find identified, I have
listed below. If you contributed and are not identified, I apologize.
Thanks to: Laura the DocWoman, Victor Chan, Mary Jean Fitzgibbons,
Geof Peters, Monte Olsen, Robyn Fizz, George Radford, John in
Indiana, Carol Hewlett, Hugh Williamson
I've pulled out entries which received more than one nomination
(the number of nominations denoted by the appropriate number of
*s). All are grouped by category (books, magazines, or general).
When it was included in the original message, I have included
comments, addresses, costs, etc.
Miscellaneous information: the Graphic Artist's Book Club (GABC),
P.O. Box 12526, Cincinnati, OH 46212-0526, (telephone: 1-800-937-
0963) sells lots of desktop publishing books and books on traditional
publishing info in general. On their DTP list they have a number
of books just on PageMaker (both MAC & PC items). Costs are
as low as $10-12 and are usually paperback, some hardcover items
run $20.00 or so. If you join, you get a monthly catalog and have to
buy 2 books in one year.
Hope this helps you all.

_Flash_ (Authors: Various, Paper, $12.95, ISBN 1-881676-00-5)
A publication dedicated to laser printer users and desktop
publishers. The Compendium has a number of useful articles on all
aspects of laser printing and desktop publishing. For example, there
are several articles on maintaining and rebuilding laser printers.
There are also interesting articles on developing a newsletter
(including production and mailing issues), publishing your own book,
using a laser printer for dye sublimation transfer work (the parent
company of Flash sells toner kits for this purpose), and the
environmental issues of laser printing. If you are interested in the
inner workings of laser printers or have an interest on exploring
various areas of DTP, the Flash Compendium is a good resource.

Graphic Designer's Guide to Faster, Better, Easier Design &
Production
Author: Poppy Evans
Publisher: North Light Books, Cincinnati, Ohio
Copyright 1993
It digests just about everything I need to know about paper
selection, color selection, type selection, production, Identity
systems, working with printers, etc. And it provides lists and
lists of vendors with addresses and phone numbers in US and Canada.
A lot of the things in the book I already knew - but this has all
those diverse facts all in one place: handy, easy to read, well
laid out. I highly recommend it for any graphic designer working
with computers or not. It's a great basics bible.
I bought it thru the graphic arts book club and it cost me $22.95.
It is 184 pages with illustrations, soft bound.

Sarah Rosenbaum suggests:
Using PageMaker 5.0 for the mac, Special Edition, by Rick Wallace,
QUE Publications.
It's written in an extremely readable, friendly style, with loads of tips about
the general world of publishing, in addition to thourough explainations of the
functions of PageMaker.

Glenn Fleishman <fleglei@HEBRON.CONNECTED.COM> wrote these reviews:
There are several books on PageMaker out there, some of which have been
updated for 5 by adding some text; others are in the process of being
rewritten. I happen to work for and share offices with a few authors who
have written and are writing books.
Random House purchase Bantam's computer book division, and "Real World
PageMaker: Industrial Strength Tips and Tricks" [Mac edition only] is
being updated. It was originally written by Ole Kvern (columnist,
Aldus Magazine; author of Real World FreeHand, also now in revision for
4) and Steve Ross (contributing editor, Macworld mag; co-author of
several books, like Real World Scanning and Halftones, Little QuicKeys
Book, etc.). The update is being written by Bruce Fraser, who's a writer
for MacWeek and a generally very very knowledgeable guy. I think this
book is due out in early spring; it's a complete rewrite around the 5.0
release.
Kvern and Roth are also writing a Mac and a PC book for Peachpit Press,
which will be out probably in mid-spring. Peachpit also has Robin
Williams' two "PageMaker Easy Desk Reference" books (one for each
platform) that are version 4 books and will probably be updated to 5.
However, these books contain a lot of general purpose information that
isn't outdated with the new release; so you may be interested in getting
the 4.2/4.0 book.
I don't have Random House's number, but they don't sell direct. Peachpit
has direct sales at 800 283 9444 (US/Canada); fax is 510 548 5991.
They'll ship worldwide.
Also, for anyone interested in attending conferences, there's Thunder
Lizard Productions, which runs The PageMaker Conference, a three-day,
choose-your-own-session seminars in Atlanta, Los Angeles, Seattle,
Chicago, Boston. Their number is 800/221-3806. I don't have the exact
cost (it's about $500-$600 depending on conference), but they can supply
details.
